This lesson plan was created to teach children in grade 4 and is designed to meet Utah Core Standards.  These ideas, activities, and materials may be used in your classroom or adapted to meet other learning standards and even grade levels.

PRESENTERS:  Veronica Kitchens

TITLE:  Bike Utah's Youth Bicycle Education and Safety Training Program

DESCRIPTION:  In 1969, 48 percent of children 5 to 14 years of age usually walked or bicycled to school.  By 2009, this dropped to 13 percent.  With physical education classes becoming less prevalent across Utah, there is a need to integrate physical activity into the daily lives of children.  Parents often cite distance to school, traffic-related danger, weather, crime, and school policy as the reasons why their child cannot bike or walk to school.  However, communities around the US and the world have managed to provide infrastructure and programs that allow students to safely transport themselves to and from school.  This session will provide: an overview of how to grow active transportation mode share; examples of successful projects and programs; and technical and connections to financial resources available for implementation.

PRESENTERS:  Phil Sarnoff
